Stokes, whose availability was in doubt because of a bruised heel, was a fortunate 62 not out and Buttler was 67 not out.

Paul struck again soon after lunch, Rory Burns falling plumb lbw for 29 to a ball that was crashing into the middle of middle - the Windies needing a review to overturn umpire Kumar Dharmasena's not-out call.

Denly, playing in his second Test, batted more positively than his captain with a number of fine drives through the off side and looked to be set for a big score until he under-edged a cut off Shannon Gabriel to the wicketkeeper.

England's Mark Wood raises the ball as he leaves the field after taking five wickets against West Indies during day two of the third cricket Test match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, St. Lucia, Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019.

Stokes moved on to 79 - his best Test score since he was involved in an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017 that resulted in a suspension - but when his mistimed hook off Kemar Roach was brilliantly taken by a diving Shane Dowrich, England unravelled.

"I was just sat in my chair and when I heard the shouting I thought someone had got out".

"I've had some awful dark days with injuries and things like confidence and self-belief", Wood said. Thank God for technology. It reminds me of the wickets that were prepared for us, the West Indians, in the 1970s and '80s. "I could have seen the amusing side of it but I also said to myself not to look at it as a big opportunity, just try to let it go and make sure I was not out at the end of the day".

Root strolled to 45 at tea with England on 207 for three, and reached his half-century in the third over after the break with a four off ineffective part-time off-spinner Roston Chase.

Wood, brought into the team for the first time this series, offered England genuine pace of more than 90 miles-per-hour (145 kph), and he had an immediate impact, causing West Indies all sorts of problems from his very first ball.

Root reached triple figures six overs from the close when he punched a Joseph full toss to the straight boundary. He's hit nine boundaries.
