It was Di Maria that would have the last laugh however, as he set up both Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe for PSG's second-half double.

But Solskjaer admitted that PSG were on "another level" but that he expects his players to respond positively and insisted it was "not impossible" to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the second leg in France on March 6, despite the "big blow" of Paul Pogba being suspended after his red card.

Alexis Sanchez replaced Lingard, but rather than turning to Romelu Lukaku in place of Martial, which would have enabled Marcus Rashford to move to the right flank and maintain United's threat, Solskjaer instead brought on Juan Mata, despite his lack of pace and inability to play on the right side of a front three.

"You can see we haven't played games at this level for a while", Solskjaer said.

PSG had to cope without the injured Neymar and Edison Cavani, two thirds of their attack, yet remained a real threat in the final third with Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria causing United problems.

Back in December everyone knew it was going to be a tough night for United, a bit of form and a couple of injuries for their opposition didn't change the fact that PSG are very good, as they proved on Tuesday night. This was the first time that Solskjaer's credentials have taken a jolt and that the reality check came in the Champions League is not good news for him.

'In the Champions League it is an important thing that you can not be dominated in midfield and the whole evening Man United were dominated in midfield, ' Wenger explained on beIN SPORTS after the game.

PSG have struggled on the road in the Champions League against elite opposition but showed little sign of nerves as they stroked the ball around confidently. It was one of those experiences that can go either way, but it's not going to be a season-defining one for us.

"At this club you bounce back, you have to bounce back", he said. After having a bottle thrown at him by United fans, Di Maria helped to complete a counterattack by crossing for the advancing Mbappe to score.

"The second goal was quality by them". The 19-year-old struck twice in six second-half minutes before Adrian Lopez replied for Porto. "The ground he (Mbappe) makes up that boy to get in the box, to all the strikers that want to be poachers that's how to get in the box".

And he was quick to torment his old team further just seven minutes later, slipping a low cross in from the left into the middle for Kylian Mbappe to steer beyond a helpless David De Gea.
