Michigan State Basketball: 5 takeaways from mammoth win at Wisconsin

Still, the Badgers could have had a larger cushion entering the second half, as they led 32-25 before Michigan State ripped off an 8-0 run to regain control in the game.

MADISON, WISCONSIN - FEBRUARY 12: Ethan Happ #22 of the Wisconsin Badgers dribbles the ball while being guarded by Xavier Tillman #23 of the Michigan State Spartans in the second half at the Kohl Center on February 12, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin.

It was one of those gritty wins that Tom Izzo-coached teams have been known for over the years and definitely a memorable one - especially for Kenny Goins who hit one of the biggest shots of his life with 30 seconds left to essentially ice the game. Perhaps no Spartan embodied that more Tuesday night than his point guard. The last, and only, time MI coach John Beilein was ejected from a game before Tuesday at Penn State was when he coached Erie Community College in 1979.

At times, the game seemed like a contest between the two heavyweights as Winston seemed to answer every Happ hook shot with a floater or 3-pointer. With two technical fouls assessed to Beilein, the Nittany Lions would hit three of four free throws to start the half before Zavier Simpson hit a trey in transition, 18 seconds into the half to nullify the free throws.

In the second half, the Badgers struggled to establish an offensive rhythm and would not take back the lead after the 17-minute mark in the second half. "You gotta continue to chip away and hope there's a breakdown, continue to work with him".

And when you look at the schedule over the final six games, you can see things aren't going to get any easier.

"We have to be more complete when we get to the free throw line, get the ball to a high percentage area and be able to complete that". Michigan's Hallie Thome needs 15 points against IN on Thursday night to become the fourth Big Ten player this season to reach 2,000 IN her career.

EditorsNote: Minor fixes, including style on 3-pointer. While he is still not a willing shooter, missing both of his three-point attempts, he was able to make some big plays down the stretch.

The Badgers trailed by just one point with 5:21 left in regulation, but their offense went cold the rest of the way. Wisconsin is 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight-up loss.

MI will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 16) when the Wolverines welcome Maryland to Crisler Center.

Wisconsin: The Badgers, who had their six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday by MI, missed out on a chance to keep pace with the conference leaders.
