Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez 'didn't like' challenge on keeper for Wolves equaliser

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez 'didn't like' challenge on keeper for Wolves equaliser

The centre-back jumped with Dubravka to meet Adama Traore's looping cross and headed home after the Newcastle goalkeeper failed to catch the ball, with referee Graham Scott deciding no foul had been committed.

Benitez's anger was enhanced because Wolves scored a stoppage-time victor at St James' Park in the reverse of this fixture in December, having believed Newcastle should have been given a foul beforehand for an elbow by Boly on Ayoze Perez.

Benitez said: "In England they don't understand the rules". I can say many things but it will not change anything.

"I didn't like the challenge at the end". You have to protect the keeper.

"After their goal the game is more hard, they stayed more compact, more aggressive, always with the danger of counter attacks, so the game becomes delicate for us".

"It wasn't a foul, and you have to give great credit to Wolves and Boly", he said.

'It is a bad way to concede. "We have one more point but it is a pity because we could have had three".

Newcastle looked to be on course to secure a vital victory in their bid to avoid relegation after Isaac Hayden opened the scoring in the 56th minute.

But, despite conceding late, Newcastle have won seven points from their last four games and also gave Almiron a second-half debut after his £20 million (Dh94.4m) move from Atlanta last month.

Though undoubtedly it will be Rafa Benitez who will be easily the more unhappy one of the two on Tuesday morning.

Wolves are chasing European football, but began 12 points behind Chelsea in sixth, so the result made no difference to their standing.

They have now scored six injury time goals in all competitions this season and boss Nuno Espirito Santo was pleased with their character.

The last gasp equaliser was predictably something he wasn't going to argue against and declared 'The job is the referee's to judge and if does not see something, it's good'.
