OnePlus may reveal a gaming-focused 5G smartphone prototype at MWC

The company has not stated that this is an example of a product that it will launch, but instead has indicated that the device will allow people to experience 5G speeds. The tech giant is working to release a 5G phone with the U.S. carrier Verizon in the first half of 2019, as well as two other 5G phones with AT&T.

The announcement of the 5G demonstration at MWC was posted by XDA Developers.

OnePlus says that MWC visitors will be invited to "communicate with [their] community over a 5G network", though it's not clear what that entails. It is expected that this phone will be offered as a separate model to the inevitable OnePlus 7 flagship refresh, which should also be based on the Snapdragon 855 SoC. Today the Chinese company confirmed that its MWC event is directly related with the 5G OnePlus handset. However, 5G will no doubt roll out quicker in markets such as Europe and North America than in India, and OnePlus likely want to have its devices ready for this well in advance. Furthermore, the company mentions that those attending to the event will be able to get a taste of 5G gaming Experience through one of its latest "OnePlus Prototype with 5G". Keep an eye out for the limited-edition Qualcomm x OnePlus pin badge, only available at the OnePlus stand.

While this might not be the finished OnePlus 7, it'll be showing us just what that phone will be capable of doing if it does end up launching with 5G.
