Real Madrid coach Solari tribute to Ramos ahead of landmark game

Real Madrid coach Solari tribute to Ramos ahead of landmark game

Marco Asensio scored a late victor for Real Madrid in a 2-1 victory at Ajax Amsterdam, who were left to rue a goal disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR) in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg on Wednesday. "Now comes the Champions League and I really want to watch the game".

The Ajax defender was the scorer of the first ever Champions League goal that was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee aka VAR.

Yet Asensio had the final word, scoring at the back post from Carvajal's cross.

Santiago Solari is hoping that his players turn up with a similar attitude in Holland. "He did everything he had to do from the moment he came into the pitch".

Early in the second half Benzema tested Onana with a low shot on the tun, before Ajax broke down the other end and David Neres fired too close to Courtois. The Dutch side have tasted defeat in two out of their last three games, including a 6-2 thumping away to rivals Feyenoord.

Solari, in charge of Real Madrid B at the time, was the coach who received him, witnessing first-hand as the 18-year-old scored twice against Atletico B, curled in a free-kick against Unionistas and equalised against Celta Vigo B. We did, but you have to be more ruthless. "He has shown his talent, but we have to take care of him".

The controversial decision meant Real went in at half-time on level terms with all three goals coming in the second half.

However, his goal was swiftly chalked off. VAR ruled out the goal with Dusan Tadic being deemed offside.

Solari said he had not seen the images.

The tournament coincided with the Copa del Rey and he thought that he was going to get some of the opportunities he needed, to prove his worth and since then he played in each and every Real Madrid game, having started the last six.

Benzema was not to be denied on the hour mark as the Frenchman rifled the ball into the top corner after some brilliant work by Vinicius Junior in the build-up.

Real Madrid have been in superb form in recent weeks but they are still behind FC Barcelona in the La Liga table, trailing the leaders by six points after 23 games. But it started confidently and Tadic almost gave Ajax the lead, his 26th-minute shot hitting the post after beating Courtois.
