Little has told investigators he considers himself an accomplished artist and promised a year ago that he could render portraits of his victims from memory.

The bureau told CNN they hoped "someone - family member, former neighbor, friend - might recognize the [victims] and provide the crucial clue in helping authorities make an identification".

"We want to give these women their names back and their family some long-awaited answers".

Samuel Little, 78, sparked investigations into cold cases in several U.S. states after he began confessing to the crimes last May.

The strategy has worked before, Buchwald said.

Little reportedly told officers that he was a good drawer and promised a year ago to produce portraits of his victims.

The victims are all captured in the final moments of their lives and most exhibit forlorn or petrified expressions, staring directly into the killer-come-artist's eyes. He'd already been behind bars at the time, serving three life sentences for the murders of three Los Angeles women.

The 78-year-old former competitive boxer last year confessed to committing 90 killings in the United States since the 1970s.

Investigators are now said to be encouraging Little to continue with his twisted artistic endeavor in the hope of bringing retrospective justice to those whose brutal deaths were once drastically overlooked.

Little targeted marginalized and vulnerable women who were often involved in prostitution or addicted to drugs, Christina Palazzolo, a crime analyst for the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program wrote in a November FBI article. For instance, one teenage victim from Miami is sporting a blue headband while a victim from Texas has purple hair.

The bureau said he has a vivid memory for detail when it comes to the women's faces and how he killed them, but is less reliable on the dates the crimes occurred.

"Over the course of that interview in May he went through city and state and gave Ranger Holland the number of people he killed in each place".

The FBI says Little, who's 78, is in poor health and is expected to remain in a Texas prison.

Samuel Little leaves the Ector County Courthouse in Odessa, Texas Thursday, December 13, 2018.

However, more than half of his confessions are yet to be confirmed or matched to open cases.

CNN has reached out to EJ Leach, the attorney representing Little in the Texas case, and has not yet received a response.

He was arrested at a Kentucky homeless shelter in September 2012 and extradited to California, where he was wanted on a narcotics charge.
