Trump seeks to undercut Schiff, complains about media coverage of Russian Federation probes

Schiff said Wednesday he has a broad plan to investigate Trump, including whether foreign actors have leverage over the president, his family or associates. But just 16 hours later, he mockingly slammed the California Democrat after Schiff announced the panel would investigate Trump's 2016 campaign, possible nefarious ties to Moscow and whether the former real estate mogul's potential interest in financial gain has influenced his decisions as chief executive.

That's largely because Senate Republicans have given no indication they would vote to remove him from office - and that vote would only come if House Democrats impeached him, which that party's leaders remain reluctant to attempt.

Holdover White House staff from the Obama administration, particularly those working on the National Security Council, have always been a concern of some Trump aides and supporters.

Schiff himself declined to confirm any new hires on Thursday, but said the intelligence committee had a "long tradition of hiring out of the intelligence community, out of the National Security Council".

Grace worked for a bipartisan think tank, Center for a New American Security, after working for both former President Barack Obama and Trump on the National Security Council from 2016 to 2018.

"We have a long tradition of hiring out of the intelligence community, out of the National Security Council, and if the president is anxious about our hiring any former administration people maybe he should work on being a better employer", Schiff said.

Trump, White House aides and many Republican lawmakers continue to raise doubts about the dossier's contents. Some officials have used the term "deep state" to refer to staffers burrowed in agencies and departments who they claim are actively working to block Trump's directives.

A person familiar with the matter said former National Security Council staffers would not be out of the ordinary on the intelligence committee.

It's unclear exactly who Trump was talking about, but the tweet comes as Schiff appears to have hired at least one staff member who served on the National Security Council under Trump.
