Trump to announce "American AI Initiative" today

Trump to announce

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday will sign an executive order asking federal government agencies to dedicate more resources and investment into research, promotion and training on artificial intelligence (AI), a senior administration official said.

This initiative, which will elevate federal funding for AI research and support US -led AI global standards, doesn't contain new AI development funding or additional details on next steps, The Verge reported.

"Continued American leadership in Artificial Intelligence is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States", Trump said.

The measure is little more than symbolic. The aim of the new initiative is to boost AI development and funding in the US and also to ensure that America is a leader when it comes to helping shape global artificial intelligence policies.

The goal of the executive order is to make sure the USA is on the spearhead of the development of this new and disruptive technology.

"Artificial intelligence is something that touches every aspect of people's lives, from the way that they receive medical care to the way they grow or eat their food, to the way that energy is extracted throughout the country", an administration official said Sunday.

Research and development: Federal funding agencies will be asked to "prioritize AI investments" in their allocations.

It's well understood that this is directed at Beijing, which in July 2017 unveiled its plan to become the world leader in artificial intelligence by 2030.

The order notes that the USA "must train current and future generations of American workers with the skills to develop and apply AI technologies to prepare them for today's economy and jobs of the future", pointing to the "heads of implementing agencies" to prioritize grants "within existing Federal fellowship and service programs".
