VA Offers Ability to Access Health Data on Smartphones

According to a new press release from the Cupertino company, Apple has reached a deal with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that will soon allow millions of USA veterans to access their Health Records using their iPhone.

This week the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced new rules that would promote such easy access. Health data stored on the app will include allergies, conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures, and vitals. The data will be encrypted and further protected with your iPhone passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.

"Given Apple's public and ongoing commitment to privacy and security and the holistic manner in which they go about providing a trusted platform in iOS, I would think Apple's health records on iPhone is likely the most secure way in which veterans can access their VA health records", Weidman said. The company announced on Monday that the VA would be the newest provider to allow remote access to medical records. "By bringing Health Records on iPhone to VA patients, we hope veterans will experience improved healthcare that will enhance their lives".

Apple today confirmed that the Health Records feature on iPhone will soon be available to veterans.

Apple's announcement follows plans that Microsoft shared last week to make patient information more accessible to all involved parties, by storing health records on the Azure cloud. There are more than 9 million veterans that utilize 1,243 VA medical facilities.

Apple has shown a particular interest in the health care industry especially since its latest smartwatches were approved by the FDA for capturing EKGs. "It's truly an honor to contribute to the improved healthcare of America's heroes".

And several government agencies, including the VA, are participants in the federal government's Blue Button program started during the Obama administration, which lets some employees, veterans and Medicare recipients check medical records online.
