World No.1 Osaka announces surprise coaching split

Osaka posted a tweet on Monday that says she "will no longer be working together with Sascha".

World No.1 Naomi Osaka has ended her successful partnership with coach Sascha Bajin. "I thank him for his work and wish him all the best in the future", Osaka said.

WIth Bajin as coach, Osaka rose from number 72 to the very summit of the world rankings in a year, winning back-to-back Grand Slams at the US Open and Australian Open.

Bajin, who has previously worked as hitting partner for Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens and Victoria Azarenka, was named WTA coach of the year in 2018.

Bajin thanked Osaka and said he wished her "nothing but the best".

Osaka's Twitter feed lit up in response to her announcement, with several memes expressing widespread disbelief - including a shrugging Barack Obama, a confused Joey from American sitcom "Friends" and a Minions character screaming "WHAAAAT?"

The 21-year-old added the Australian Open to her growing list of honors in January and consequently topped the world rankings for the first time in her career.

Osaka withdrew from this week's Qatar Open, citing a back injury. "Behind every tennis player is a great team".
