- Two young men, wearing hoods and carrying firearms and other weapons, opened fire at a school in southern Brazil on Wednesday, killing eight people before taking their own lives, authorities said.

The last major school shooting in Brazil occurred in 2011, when 12 students in Rio de Janeiro were shot dead by a gunman.

The attackers appeared to be in their early to mid-20s, and authorities don't believe they were former students, the governor said.

The unidentified gunmen, who appeared to be between 20 and 25 years of age, shot and killed a worker at a nearby auto wash before their attack at the Raul Brasil school, police said.

However, current Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro signed a temporary decree in January that made it easier for citizens to buy guns in an effort to overturn the strict regulations of the past.

Gun crime is extremely common in Brazil but school shootings are rare.

The assailants were trying to force their way inside a room at the back of the school where many students were hiding when police arrived.

"I have just received the sad news that children were cruelly murdered in the state school Professor Raul Brasil, in Suzano". He grabbed one girl by the hair and punched her several times in the face.

Gonçalves, the housewife who lives nearby, gave safe harbor to several students, including one boy who was shot in the jaw.

Police said they had not found a motive for the deadly incident. Investigators said they had a pact to die together in the attack although Globo TV, citing police, reported that Monteiro killed Castro, and then turned the pistol on himself.

The school has primary and secondary students, and the identities of the victims and the alleged attackers have not yet been released. Castro's body lay near Monteiro's, with the crossbow on the ground between the pair.
