Dolphins deal Ryan Tannehill to Titans

The Dolphins will have a new starting quarterback in 2020.

Tannehill is expected to serve as back-up to Marcus Mariota.

Miami has traded the oft maligned and greatly criticized quarterback to the Tennessee Titans.

Tannehill, in all likelihood, was going to be released by the Dolphins this offseason, pending what they could figure out in the quarterback market.

As part of the trade, Tannehill agreed to rip up his existing contract and sign a new one-year, $7 million fully guaranteed deal that NFL Network reports is worth upwards to $12 million if he meets all of his incentives.

The Dolphins will receive a fourth round pick in 2020 and a seventh rounder in 2019 while the Titans will also acquire a 2019 sixth rounder along with Tannehill. "We wish him the best with the next step of his career".

The Dolphins chose to move on from Tannehill earlier this offseason and they've spent the last few weeks actively pursuing a trade.

Tannehill returned last season and helped the Dolphins get off to a 3-0 start, but he sustained a shoulder injury late in the Week 5 loss against the Cincinnati Bengals and would be forced to sit out the following five games.

But Tannehill never lived up to expectations in Miami. The belief is Miami might be willing to eschew taking a quarterback in the first round this year in order to set itself up to take one in next year's draft.

The past two seasons have been marred by injuries as Tannehill missed all of the 2017 season due to a knee injury suffered in training camp. Tannehill earned a flawless 158.3 passer rating and was rewarded by being named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
