Google says cheerio to Allo messenger today

Google says cheerio to Allo messenger today

We've seen this with App Actions in Android and suggested edits in Google Photos, and now a similar feature has arrived in the Google Messages app.

However, you can only delete your copy of the conversation history in Hangout Chat.

The two-year experiment (short, by Google terms) hasn't been a complete wash, though - Google's taken learnings and features from Allo and integrated them into products like Messages (its Android SMS/MMS/RCS app), that recently saw the addition of Google Assistant offering suggestions in the conversation.

For better or worse, that shutdown date happens to be today: March 12.

Google Allo shutting down today. Save your chat history

Allo will continue to work through March 2019 and until then, you'll be able to export all of your existing conversation history from the app-here are instructions on how to do so. In the app, go to Settings Chat to get access to your data. As mentioned by the company, Hangouts Chat now enable users to delete conversation history of 1:1 direct messages.

It's time to say goodbye to Allo! The exported messages are stored in CSV file format and includes details like Conversation name, ID, sender, message type, and message content. Exporting messages from chats won't include photos or videos.

Choose where you want to store the files. Google hoped this would make it easier for people to start using Allo as a replacement for SMS. At the end of 2018, Google confirmed Allo would shut down after it failed to gain traction.

Allo was launched back in 2016 alongside Google's first-party video calling app, Duo.
