How safe is Boeing's 737 MAX 8 aircraft? | US & Canada

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg spoke with President Donald Trump and reiterated that the 737 Max 8 is safe, the company said.

Boeing shares, which were up earlier in the session, fell 2 per cent to US$367.70. The drop has lopped $26.65 billion off Boeing's market value.

Even so, grounding the aircraft won't cripple air travel in Orlando or across the US, said aviation journalist Seth Kaplan.

At a hearing of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Bridenstine said he would have no qualms about flying in one of the planes, even as aviation officials in Europe and around the world have ordered hundreds of Boeing aircraft grounded.

Earlier this week, the US Federal Aviation Administration insisted that the planes were safe, despite growing concerns after the latest crash of the aircraft.

With all Boeing 737-800 Max aircraft set to stop operating in Indian airspace from 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Ministry has called a meeting of various airlines to keep a check on fares from spiralling.

An Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed Sunday, shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa.

The 737 Max airlines are a small percentage of the fleets for both American and Southwest Airlines, having been introduced into service just two years ago.

"In addition to the basic trainings given for 737 aircraft types, an additional training was given for the Max version", Tewolde told to state news reporters. That was the second crash involving that plane in question; Lion Air flight 610 crashed in October previous year, killing 189. Both planes crashed shortly after takeoff.

Southwest is the world's largest operator of the 737 MAX 8 with 34 jets, while American flies 24 MAX 8s and United 14 MAX 9s.

Regulators across the world shut operation of the 737 down, sending the company's stock price falling.

Trump followed dozens of countries that grounded the aircraft after two deadly crashes in the past five months, including an Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday that killed 157 people.

Given problems of identification of charred remains, it will take days to start returning them to families, probably weeks for some which will require dental or DNA testing.

The passengers came from more than 30 nations. In the 737 Max, MCAS does this automatically, moving the aircraft back to a "normal" flight position.

Many airlines were keeping to schedule by using other jets while economic woes meant some may be grateful for a pause.

Passengers were fretting too, with many seeking reassurances they would not be flying on a 737 Max. Kayak.com was the first big site to say it would modify filters to allow customers to exclude particular types of planes from queries.

While aviation experts warn against drawing conclusions until more information emerges from the crash investigation, numerous jurisdictions - including China, Germany, the United Kingdom and the European Union - have grounded the Max 8 or banned it from their airspace. Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal called for flights to be stopped, as have Republican Senators Mitt Romney and Ted Cruz. "We should not have these up in the air at all", Kimber Climie said.
