How To Watch The Tesla Model Y Launch

The Model Y is based on the smallest auto in Tesla's range, the $35,000 Model 3, which Mr Musk hopes will bring electric motoring to the mass market.

UPDATE TWO The event is seemingly running a little bit behind as the live stream link is telling fans who registered for it to "hold tight" but it should begin within the next few minutes. That means if the Model Y is offered in a Standard Range, rear-wheel drive configuration like the Model 3, we should expect a starting price of around $38,500. The increased commonality should make the Model Y easier to integrate into current assembly processes and make it somewhat less expensive to produce. Or so says Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a recent tweet.

The Model Y is about 10 percent larger than the Model 3.

With hours to go until the Tesla Model Y is given its formal debut, the electric vehicle maker has teased its second crossover on Twitter.

With that big of trivia out of the way, the Model Y is expected to be largely based on the Model 3.

Tesla is teasing the Model Y with an image of its blacked out silhouette to promote Thursday's reveal. Compact SUVs are the largest vehicle segment and is 50 percent larger than the next-largest segment.

If you registered for the live stream for the Model Y launch then you should have received your email from Tesla. So despite Elon tweeting the Model Y would have them, yeah, no. It will share 75 percent of its components with the Model 3.

This set-up should help the Model Y make it into production quicker and cost less to develop.
