Indian police files charges against cricketer Shami

Indian police filed charges on Thursday against fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been accused of various crimes including assault and sexual harassment by his estranged wife. He has been charged under IPC 498A (Dowry Harassment) and 354A (Sexual Harassment).

The bitter spat between Shami and his estranged wife Hasin Jahan came out in open on March 7 previous year after the latter posted screenshots of the Indian pacer's alleged affair on social media. Jahan had taken to social media to post screenshots of Shami's alleged affairs with other women. The charge sheet has been submitted by the Kolkata police on his estranged wife Hasin Jahan's complaint.

The chargesheet was filed against the fast bowler almost a year after his wife Hasin Jahan lodged a police complaint, levelling multiple charges against Shami and four of his family members.

The pacer was first stripped of a contract by the BCCI. BCCI therefore completed their internal investigation on match fixing accusations and gave him a clean chit and reinstated his central contract. According to the latest contracts, Shami has been given a Grade A contract (Rs 5 lakh). In her complaint, she had accused Shami of torture, physical abuse and mental harassment. Shami's brother Haseeb Ahmed has also been named in the chargesheet under the same sections.

Shami last played in the just-concluded One Day International series against Australia, where he picked five wickets in four matches.
