Throughout pre-season testing, their nearest rivals Ferrari appeared to be more comfortable, faster package on track, while Mercedes kept their powder dry and racked up the mileage.

While Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel has won the Australian Grand Prix for the past two years, he has ultimately flattered to deceive, each time losing the driver's title to Lewis Hamilton with two races to spare.

"Everyone in Brackley and Brixworth has poured so much effort and commitment into this new vehicle, so we're excited to finally see it compete on track in Melbourne. But we're confident that we can do that during the course of the year".

Next week F1 is in Melbourne, Australia's Albert Park for the season opener, and signs are growing that Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) have their strongest opportunity yet to break MercedesAMG's hold on the Tier 1 motorsport.

"Judging from the performance in Barcelona, it looks like we will have a proper fight on our hands in Melbourne".

In the first race of a new season, there will be plenty of attention on those drivers who have switched teams since a year ago.

"It will push us to our limits - and that's an exciting prospect for every single one of us".

"There is too much disparity between the top two or three teams and the rest of the grid", he said, speaking in London this week to F1i.com.

Ferrari is going into the 2019 F1 season as the title favourite and with a refreshed atmosphere under new boss Mattia Binotto.

"We're ready for the fight and look forward to the insane rollercoaster of a new F1 season".
