Minus Durant, Warriors survive late Rockets rally

Following the Golden State Warriors' 106-104 win at the Houston Rockets in which he played the best game of his tenure with the team, DeMarcus Cousins compared this season to being in the middle of a soap opera.

There is, however, a 6-foot-11, 270-pound wild card in the equation that wasn't around for the West finals past year.

Heading into this battle at the Toyota Center, the Warriors had every reason to take the L. Having lost four of their last six games, they were without Kevin Durant and were up against a red-hot Rockets squad that had won its previous nine contests heading into this nationally televised battle between the two reigning Western Conference Finals participants. And he was a liability in the Warriors' Feb. 23 loss to the Rockets, a nonfactor offensively and picked on defensively.

"It's OK", Harden said when answering a question that started with how the Rockets were on a roll.

With all the talk of Cousins' breakout game, Klay Thompson had a achieved a milestone of his own, making his 200th 3-pointer of the season, joining his teammate Stephen Curry as the only other player to reach 200 or more 3-pointers in seven consecutive seasons. "That's the goal. I'm gonna have to guard somebody, and I'm looking forward to it". He adds a whole new dimension to our team.

The Rockets not only want to finish out the season strong to try to pass Golden State and second-place Denver for the top seed in the West. Good luck asking a guard to keep Cousins from feasting in the paint. Cousins did the majority of his damage Wednesday against Capela, but Houston's center didn't seem too concerned after the Warriors' lone win over the Rockets this season.

"We made a concerted effort to feed him in the post", Curry said. "So [he] did a good job and I'm not anxious about that".

The Rockets also have gotten a boost recently from the strong play of Eric Gordon.

"Avery Bradley, Patrick Beverley, Paul George, Vic Oladipo-I put myself in that category in terms of defense". Without Durant, the Warriors needed another prominent half-court facilitator, and Cousins fit the bill to a tee. For Cousins, that's kind of the beauty of blending in with a team that has arguably as much offensive firepower as any in National Basketball Association history. "We had to throw it to "Boogie" (Collins) in the post and he came through for us in a big way".

"The good thing is that we play again this Friday, it's just one loss". "I've got to learn how to use him better". Just as they have since last year's playoffs, the Warriors got up for the big game and reminded everyone just how good they can be - even without Durant. When they choose to play at a high level, not many opponents can match them in a single game, much less over the course of a seven-game playoff series.

Late in the fourth quarter, Harden looked for another switch matchup against Curry, only to jerk his head back when driving into Curry and stumbling, hoping to get the foul call.
