Netflix Canceled 'One Day at a Time' & the Internet Is in Mourning

Netflix axed the critically acclaimed comedy about a Cuban-American family on Thursday morning, posting a Twitter thread explaining the "very hard decision". The Hollywood Reporter clarified that even if it is bought, Netflix would own the first three seasons.

Fans of the Latinx series slammed the media company, taking to Twitter in droves to accuse Netflix of failing to promote the show. "We've worked on many shows, but never have we experienced the outpouring of love, connection, and support like we have with ODAAT", the statement continued.

In a rare move, Netflix addressed the cancellation in a Twitter thread, writing, "We've made the very hard decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season". "My heart is breaking, but I still can't help but thank Netflix for giving the Alvarez family a home for 3 years and for changing my life... and to the fans: familia para siempre".

One Day's third season ended with Penelope's graduation from nursing school. Are you a fan of the series and were you saddened to hear Netflix canceled it after three seasons? Other show co-creator, Gloria Calderón Kellett, shared a string of tweets about her gratefulness and experience with the show. Heartbreak is part of it.


At this point, no announcement has been made indicating whether or not the show will be picked up. "While it's disappointing that more viewers didn't discover 'One Day at a Time, ' I believe the series will stand the test of time".

"TO be dramatic... if Netflix doesn't renew One Day At A Time I will be SO pissed like I will be DEVASTATED", another fan said on Twitter. Despite this, the show repeatedly struggled to earn season renewals from Netflix.

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, producer Sony Pictures Television plans to shop the series elsewhere.
