Saint Mary's knocks off No. 1 Gonzaga for WCC title

Saint Mary's knocks off No. 1 Gonzaga for WCC title

Gonzaga averages nearly 90 points per game and Saint Mary's shut down the nation's most efficient offense with an incredible display of discipline and commitment to the game's pace and getting back on defense. "I don't know that we were shying away from her, but one of the things we do is that we're strong".

Brandon Clarke led Gonzaga with 16 points and Hachimura was held to nine, almost 12 under his average. Mark Few is one of the best coaches in the country and sure to address the issue in practice between now and the NCAA Tournament, but there's no doubt this performance is not what Gonzaga fans wanted to see at a time when you'd like to see a championship contender playing its best basketball.

Creighton: The Bluejays (18-13, 9-9 Big East) are still squarely on the bubble, but their five-game winning streak to close the regular season - including a win at Marquette - means they have plenty to play for this week. Gonzaga has 49 assists on 98 field goals (50 percent) over its past three outings while Saint Mary's has assists on 23 of 73 field goals (31.5 percent) during its past three games.

'We knew we were going to win:' How Saint Mary's upset...

"Gonzaga likes to get out and run, they feed off energy", Ford said. We were able to keep them out of transition and take care of the ball. The junior, who averages 8.9 points per game, had 13 by halftime to push the Gaels to a 27-24 lead. The Gaels extended the lead to 48-41 with 7 minutes left and answered every time Gonzaga tried to make a run. They've got a pretty good case, but they're No. 58 in the NET rankings and it's going to be long wait until Sunday.

Gonzaga was never able to speed the Gaels up and rev up their high-scoring offense, showing a weakness that could be exploited. The versatile 6-foot-8 Japanese forward entered the WCC title game averaging 20.1 points and is a top All-America contender.
