Shots fired at New Zealand mosque, casualties reported

People in the centre of the city should stay indoors, police said.

New Zealand has restrictive gun laws, of the sort proposed by gun control advocates in the United States.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that Christchurch Police have arrested one person in connection with the attacks.

Ardern said at a Friday afternoon news conference, "what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with our Kiwi cousins", he said.

"Police is now at a number of scenes", police said.

Local media said there were multiple casualties at one mosque and said another had been evacuated, and there were reports that members of the Bangladesh cricket team were also present at one site.

He then re-entered the mosque to check for survivors - and began firing again into the people lying motionless.

"I was in the mosque".

"There were more than 200 people inside". The gunman came from the backside. Gunshots went on for a long time. "Some are still inside and we have been calling but can't get hold of them", Ibrahim said.

One suspect is in custody but police warned they are still tracing an active shooter. "We are working to have any footage removed".

Armed police have been reportedly checking all vehicles outside Christchurch Hospital amid reports another shooter is in the area.

"Police urge anyone in central Christchurch to stay off the streets and report any suspicious behavior immediately to 111", he added. All schools and government buildings in the city are on lockdown.

According to Stuff.co.nz, the shooting occurred near at least one mosque in the area.

He said he chose New Zealand because of its location, to show that even the most remote parts of the world were not free of "mass immigration". It has an agricultural economy.
