WMG is suing Spotify over music licensing rights in India, after revoking a previously agreed upon license (for reasons unrelated to Spotify's launch in India, according to Spotify).

Spotify also has plans to move beyond music into the growing podcast market.

Saavvn offered a vast catalogue of songs across 15 languages but like many streaming apps, including Spotify, Saavn struggled to turn rapid growth into profit.

Spotify is coming late to streaming in India.

"India is a big market and a huge opportunity for Spotify", Blaise Fernandes, president of Indian Music Industry, an industry body, told AFP.

This is where it starts to get a little messy - WMG fired back, saying that a statutory license only applies to traditional television and radio broadcasters - not an online streaming service.

Bombay's also supported Spotify's contention. The court decided that Spotify must pause their application for a statutory license, while simultaneously deferring WMG's injunction.

Spotify goes live in India earlier this week, bringing with it an arsenal of exclusive perks to go against the already-teeming music streaming scene in the country.

Spotify of course may be slightly exaggerating their case, with the idea that no WMG music would significantly hurt Spotify's presence in India.

Spotify announced Wednesday its much-anticipated launch into India, offering Bollywood and regional content as it seeks to attract millions of new users onto the world's largest music streaming platform. While users who used Spotify Premium using VPN services can migrate to the Indian pricing by changing their default location.

Amarjit Singh Batra, Managing Director, Spotify India, adds: "Indians love music". Spotify is now available in 79 countries.

In India, Spotify might be competing with the likes of Apple Music, Google Play/YouTube Music, JioSaavn, Gaana, and Amazon, a standout favourite because it prices 999 rupees a yr (about $14) and consists of free supply on orders, Prime Video, Prime Studying, further reductions, and Prime Music.
