World Rugby's €5.8b defence of Nations Championship

World Rugby's €5.8b defence of Nations Championship

At the meeting of unions, competition owners and worldwide player representatives, World Rugby outlined details of a game-changing competition model that they say delivers a "true pathway for all unions through a three-division format and a system of promotion and relegation".

Here, Press Association Sport examines the latest twists and turns in the sport's complex power wrangling. The International Rugby Players Council is also calling on the governing body and its member unions to enter meaningful negotiations on how to best work together in future, citing that decisions are too often reached without any opportunity for players to positively influence the outcome.

News of the offer comes on the eve of a World Rugby-hosted meeting in Dublin in which the controversial Nations League is to be discussed.

Six Nations bosses are understood to be opposed to the idea of promotion and relegation, that underpins World Rugby's Nations Championship concept.

What are the downsides to CVC's Six Nations proposals?

World Rugby, who was mandated by the unions to investigate the viability of an annual competition, argue this is a short-term outlook on growth due, with the blocking of promotion and relegation reducing competitiveness.

CVC's bid for the Six Nations is a natural extension of its strategy to invest in the sport, with the private equity group believing it can provide the financial firepower and corporate knowhow to derive better sponsorship and broadcast deals for the game.

The move follows CVC's acquisition in December of a 27 per stake in the commercial arm of Premiership Rugby, the top tier of English club rugby. And where television is concerned, the way for CVC to maximise revenue is to strike a deal for the Six Nations to be screened on pay subscription services.

However, it is believed should they accept CVC's offer it would lead to the Six Nations being taken away from free to air television - it has been rumoured that Amazon are circling.

Why so much opposition to World Rugby's Nations Championship?

The International Rugby Players Association recently savaged World Rugby's plans as a sizeable threat to future player safety.

England captain Owen Farrell and Ireland fly-half Johnny Sexton are among the game's biggest names to have warned of serious player welfare and integrity concerns over World Rugby's proposed new competition structure.

Both the International Rugby Players (IRP) and the London-based Pacific Rugby Players Welfare (PRPW) organisation had been up in arms over original proposals that were leaked a fortnight ago. Its European company was founded in 1981 and boasts investments across the globe.

"It's in the interest of our game that World Rugby and the unions convene with the playing population so that proper solutions can be agreed".
