Barr on Mueller memo: 'The letter speaks for itself'

Barr said in the summary that Mueller did not reach a conclusion on whether the president obstructed justice and instead presented evidence on both sides of the question. It may have been premature. Three-quarters of Americans think the full Mueller report should be made public, according to a PBS NewsHour-NPR-Marist poll conducted after the report was filed.

Barr has faced scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers for his four-page summary of Mueller's report, which took 22 months to complete, and is reportedly almost 400 pages long.

Trump seems to be of the same mind.

"Today, I write encouraging you to invite special counsel Robert S. Mueller, III to testify before our committee without delay", Rep. "So I'm not going to discuss it any further until after the report is out".

The announcement comes after Barr on Tuesday told members of Congress he was reviewing the Department of Justice's "conduct" during the summer of 2016.

Barr said in the summary released last month that Mueller didn't find a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and the Kremlin. And Democrats immediately called for Mueller to testify and for his entire 400-page report to be released.

That didn't stop the president's allies from declaring victory.

They falsely claimed Mueller had exonerated Trump, painted House Democrats' investigations as partisan overreach and planned to target news outlets and individual reporters they believe promoted the collusion story. The president himself seethed at a MI rally that the whole thing was an attempt "to tear up the fabric of our great democracy". Democratic lawmakers expressed frustration after the hearing that Barr wouldn't answer certain questions, such as whether the White House had been briefed about the Mueller report.

Those officials and advisers acknowledged that the victory lap was deliberately premature. Barr's letter, for instance, hinted that there would be at least one unknown action by the president that Mueller examined as a possible act of obstruction. A number of White House aides have privately said they are eager for Russian Federation stories, good or bad, to fade from the headlines.

"Barr said he will deliver the Mueller report to Congress within a week, and it will have color-coded reductions", noted The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon. Marco Rubio's 2016 presidential campaign.

The House Judiciary Committee has approved, but not sent, subpoenas for the report, and top Democrats have said they are willing to take the battle to court.

"As I say, it's hard to have that discussion without the contents of the report, isn't it?" he said. A separate investigation is being conducted by the Justice Department inspector general into the early days of the FBI's Russian Federation probe, which Barr said he expects to conclude sometime around May or June.

"Time really is of the essence", he said.
