Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov in concussion protocol after absorbing Ovie punches

In a scary brawl featuring two unlikely foes in Ovechkin - the grizzly future Hall of Famer and Svechnikov, the Carolina Hurricanes' 19-year-old wunderkind trying to follow in The Great 8's footsteps - the elder Russian won in a knockout fashion that would leave even Mike Tyson speechless.

In shocking scenes, Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin floored Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov with a punch.

After the game, Ovechkin told reporters that he doesn't consider himself a "big fighter" and that he hopes Svechnikov is "OK". He received a five-minute major penalty.

The Capitals went on to win the game 5-0, with Carolina now trailing the best-of-seven series 2-0.

I hope Svechnikov is okay because he got knocked out in epic fashion, and I imagine most of the sports fans in the country will have seen it by noon today. "... It's a little bit tough, because I just heard Ovi talk about it; he said our guy challenged him". Monday's bout was just the fourth fight of his career, and the first in eight years. Svechnikov fell to the ice and had a hard time getting up all while Ovi was fine.

A different angle of the tilt displays the gruesome moment a little clearer.

When asked Tuesday if fighting is still necessary in hockey, Brind'Amour said: "I don't know if it's ever been necessary". If you watch the video, he slashes him twice - Ovi, whack, whack - then Svech gets him back. He had one goal and two assists in the Capitals' first two games in these playoffs.

Players sometimes get a little too bold and forget their place. "He's played 90 games, he never fought in his life, I'm pretty sure Ovie knew that".
