Netflix suddenly drops AirPlay support from its iOS apps

However, there is no ideal explanation given by Netflix as to why the company is blocking Airplay on Apple devices.

"Airplay is no longer supported for use with Netflix on iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch due to technical limitations", a Netflix statement vaguely explained on a support page on the firm's help site. The feature, as it should, has just worked in that time, which meant that subscribers could invoke streaming on their mobile device and then project that stream wirelessly to another AirPlay device.

"Netflix told Macrumors: "...we have made a decision to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices". TV these days are smart enough and several app are built-in, including Netflix.

The decision is expected to boost demand for Google Chromecast with Apple eco system fans tipped to switch to Android based devices that are not affected by the decision. In a statement to The Verge, Netflix says with Apple rolling out AirPlay support to more TVs and devices, it has pulled the ability for Netflix to differentiate between the playback device - an Apple TV or a third-party TV.

We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. Streaming giant had first offered support for AirPlay in 2013.

Apple recently partnered with most of the major TV brands to allow AirPlay 2 to send shows directly to their 2019 TV sets with a firmware update later this year, but a Netflix spokeperson tells me AirPlay 2 doesn't have digital identifiers to let Netflix tell those TVs apart - and so the company can't certify its users are getting the best Netflix experience when casting to those new sets.

Something doesn't add up here. Netflix's interactive shows do not work on Apple TV either.

The Apple TV and other AirPlay-ready devices will include a Netflix app built-in. With that in mind, AirPlay isn't exactly a critical feature. One has an ecosystem of over 1 billion users, while the other is the world's leading streaming service.
