Newcastle boss Benitez delighted with matchwinner Ayoze Perez

Newcastle United secured a big 1-0 win at Leicester City to all but cement their Premier League status for another year.

Leicester had won four in a row, with Brendan Rodgers among the nominees for March's Premier League manager of the month award after succeeding Claude Puel in February.

The Magpies drew first blood 32 minutes in after Ayoze Perez headed a well-orchestrated delivery from Matt Ritchie into the far post.

Salomon Rondon nearly gave Newcastle the lead midway through the first half with a ferocious 30-yard free-kick that cannoned back off the woodwork.

Newcastle took the lead in the 32nd minute, though.

Perez was denied by a fine save from Schmeichel in a frantic finale. We couldn't break down their defence.

But Newcastle had a nervy finale and Javier Manquillo was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he appeared to tug Tielemans' arm in the box in the closing stages.

Afterwards boss Benitez, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, hinted he is ready to stay now safety is virtually assured. I'm not saying £200m but doing a little bit more, doing the right things, we can compete against the teams that are now maybe between seventh and 12th.

"It should be a great win for the team, we fought really hard against a good side in a tough place". His seven tackles were more than anyone else on the pitch recorded.

Vardy recorded a single shot on target during the game, failing to test Dubravka when teed up by Tielemans in the closing stages, and was brilliantly marshalled by a Newcastle back line that denied him space to show off his pace.

Ayoze Perez says Newcastle United are all but safe - after "suffering" for the cause.

Brendan Rodgers hopes Leicester will learn from a disappointing display that saw them lose 1-0 to Newcastle on Friday Night Football.

Almiron proved in the MLS that he can be a goalscoring threat on his left foot and he needs to try being more clinical in the final third in the Premier League.

Perez was last season's leading scorer with 10 goals in all competitions, including eight in the league.

It has been a long campaign for Newcastle.
