Tyronn Lue, Monty Williams Considered Frontrunners After Parting Ways With Luke Walton

Walton went 98-148 in his three years in the job.

Although some wondered if Magic Johnson's abrupt departure from the Lakers might save Walton and his staff, it's clear it did nothing more than maybe buy them an extra day or two.

The Los Angeles Lakers had a very messy season, and even towards the end, the Ball family and their business associates were causing some additional headaches for the team's braintrust.

"I want to thank Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Lakers", Walton said in a statement.

"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service over the last three years", said Pelinka.

Walton finished his third season as head coach with a frustrating and disappointing 37-45 record in a season that began with massive expectations after LeBron James' arrival. "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

After weeks of speculation, the Los Angeles Lakers have chose to go in a different direction.

Lue was the head coach for the Cavaliers over the last three seasons when James was in Cleveland, including in 2016 when the Cavaliers beat the Warriors for the National Basketball Association title.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Luke Walton have mutually agreed to part ways, it was announced today by Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka.

The Lakers' season fell apart during the longest injury absence of James' career, and they ended the season with almost every important player in their young core sidelined by additional injuries. The current Lakers were the franchise's most successful team since their playoff drought began in 2013, but it wasn't enough to save Walton's job. "They did everything right, I'll say that".
