"Media trying to cover security incident with Secret Service keeping everyone back", she wrote.

The man was standing across Pennsylvania Avenue in Lafayette Park.

Washington reports a suspicious package was also found near the suspect, who is understood to have mental health issues.

They said: "A male subject operating an electronic wheelchair-type scooter lit his outer jacket on fire while sitting along Pennsylvania Ave. outside the North Fence Line".

"The whole area in front of the White House is now secured". Uniformed Division Officers then respondedimmediately, extinguishing the fire and providing first aid.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As a precaution, the White House remained on a partial lockdown at 4:15 p.m. Pennsylvania Avenue was closed to pedestrians and a section of 17th Street was closed to vehicles in both directions. "They say there are also suspicious packages", Kristof said.

"Someone apparently set himself on fire in front of the White House just now".

Helicopters are circling overhead but per USSS there is "no threat to the president" and first aid is being rendered to the man.

The man is said to have lit his jacket on fire while he was wearing it after arriving on the scooter Friday afternoon.
