Championship play-offs: Aston Villa pip West Brom to final spot

Aston Villa booked their place in the Championship play-off final for the second season in succession on Tuesday evening, and after they saw off West Bromwich Albion on penalties, their fans were quick to salute their star of the show on social media.

Villa won the first leg 2-1 at home but Craig Dawson's first-half header levelled it up for West Brom.

Leeds United and Derby are in the other playoff semi-final.

Villa's hopes for Premier League promotion will now rest on a May 27 date with either Leeds United or Derby County, the victor of which will be decided at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Villa went about regaining their advantage, and proceedings looked to be heading back in their favour when Baggies captain Chris Brunt was sent off 10 minutes from full time.

Conor Hourihane, Mile Jedinak, Jack Grealish and Tammy Abraham all scored their spot-kicks for Villa with the only miss coming from Albert Adomah, taking fourth, who blazed his penalty over the crossbar.

Despite incessant pressure from the Villans, the hosts managed to hold on through extra-time and force a shootout.

Aston Villa players celebrate after winning the penalty shootout at The Hawthorns in West Bromwich May 14, 2019. "All of us are very hungry".

The Championship playoff final is regarded as the most lucrative match in world football with last year's clash between Fulham and Villa worth about £170 million (RM915.3 million) even if, as in Fulham's case, the victor is relegated after one season in the top flight.

Despite this, he came up huge for his team in the shootout, saving from both Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi, West Brom's first two takers.
