De Ligt's future closer to resolution as Ajax close in on title

De Ligt's future closer to resolution as Ajax close in on title

De Ligt has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United in recent weeks, but the Catalans have always been at the front of the queue for his signature.

He told Omnisport in March: "Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues".

"He is clearly a player with a bright future ahead of him and is only nineteen years old".

His performances this season have caught the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs but according to Jermaine Jenas, if he was in charge of Manchester City (for example), he would go after Slabhead himself - Harry Maguire - instead of the Dutch wonderkid.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper went as far as saying that De Ligt would be heading for a move to either England or Spain.

Barcelona are reportedly concerned Liverpool may try and hijack their deal to sign Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt this summer.

"I think these will be De Ligt's final games with Ajax", he admitted.

The latest from the Daily Mirror is that United passed up on the opportunity to sign De Ligt haead of the 2018/19 campaign that just ended based on the advice of scout Marcel Bout. "The only difference is the age".

The Netherlands worldwide has been instrumental in helping his side challenge for their domestic title this season and their progression to the semi-finals of the Champions League, scoring against both Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur.

"I have never seen such a good defender at 19 years old", he said.

Things have been on hold with so much at play, but Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu has already hinted he knows how things will end up.
