Jets fire GM Maccagnan, name HC Gase interim replacement

Gase becomes the only National Football League head coach to also hold the official title of general manager, although Patriots head coach Bill Belichick essentially has served both duties since coming to New England in 2000.

Johnson also said, "Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the last few months".

News of Maccagnan's firing comes amid rumors that he and Gase got into an argument centered around the draft, and how much they should have offered running back Le'Veon Bell. Johnson goes on to justify today's choice "what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets".

On Wednesday, the Jets fired Maccagnan and Vice President of Player Personnel Brian Heimerdinger. I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately.

The New York Jets are making a big chance at the top of their front office heading into the 2019 season.

Pretty insane, obviously. And then there's this: According to New York Daily News reporter Manish Mehta, Gase - the head coach and now acting GM, mind you - didn't want the team to sign Bell to the four-year, $52.5 million contract inked in March.

Maccagnan's first move was hiring Todd Bowles as head coach, though Bowles was sacked earlier this year.

Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly was one of two names mentioned Wednesday by NFL Media's Ian Rapoport as the Jets' potential replacement hire for Maccagnan.

With Gase named as acting GM, it's likely safe to assume that he'll have a say in who is hired to the general manager position.
