Liverpool trio named in Southgate’s England squad

Southgate plans to leave the England camp to attend the contest between Liverpool and Tottenham that could involve nine of the players he named in an extended 27-man squad on Thursday, giving him the opportunity to make a personal assessment of the players he then hopes can end that 53-year wait for a second worldwide senior trophy.

Forwards Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Nathan Redmond, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Callum Wilson.

"I don't think we have had a time where we haven't had a lot of pullouts but we have a really strong squad".

England captain Harry Kane has been selected by Southgate for the seniors, despite an ankle ligament injury, while Harry Winks has also got the nod after groin surgery. "Those Champions League nights that we've just had might have had five-fold the numbers so that's always a constant battle because we wouldn't have the quality of the Premier League without the money that is in it".

If England beat Holland on June 6 in Guimaraes, they will face either hosts Portugal or Switzerland in the final in Porto three days later.

But the England manager is a firm believer that Three Lions football should be free-to-all at a time when Champions League viewing is also affected by the fact it is only on BT Sport.

He said: "I guess people didn't think about one nation having so many players in that final". We are keeping that door open.

Though England missed out on lifting the World Cup last summer, they have another opportunity for success this year in the inaugural Nations League finals. I remember talking to some young kids about the Ashes and them saying, "well, we haven't seen it".

Both were chosen in Southgate's squad and the manager insists there will be no ramifications from their collision at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There are no other surprises for players included in the squad, but Manchester United's left-back Luke Shaw has been left out, with Southgare saying the good form of Rose and Chilwell meant: 'We are blessed with so much talent in that department'.
