Microsoft makes May 2019 Windows Update generally available

Microsoft revealed yesterday evening that it has started the rollout of the new feature update for its Windows 10 operating system called the May 2019 Update or Windows 10 version 1903.

In addition to the above there are quite a lot of changes that may be of interest to "IT Pros", as detailed on the Microsoft Tech Community blog. If you recall, SandboxEscaper doesn't think too highly Microsoft and has published other zero-day vulnerabilities affecting the company's software dating back to the summer of 2018.

In theory, using a restore point after a Windows Update has been performed shouldn't cause any problems - but it does. Feature updates will download in the background, and managing Active Hours will help ensure that you're prepared for when they do arrive. Users who want the update as soon as possible can manually check for downloads; everyone else can keep tabs on the release through Windows release health dashboard.

When the update hits your device, it will start to download and prepare the update for installation and will prompt you to reboot your computer when its time. Make sure to save your work beforehand and close any open applications.

Visually, the Windows 10 update delivers a new "light theme" for the Windows desktop and apps.

The problem with zero-day vulnerabilities, of course, is that you don't really have any way of protecting yourself until Microsoft patches the bug.

In short, the latest Windows 10 May update v1903 brings more control over updates and greater transparency for a better update experience. Microsoft hasn't said when ISO files containing the full update will be available, though a "clean install" of the update doesn't appear to be as important as it's been in previous feature updates. Once everything is ready you can choose when to start the update.

If you're anxious about these and future vulnerabilities, consider upgrading your system.

The update is also available to those who download either the update tool or media creation tool from Microsoft. Microsoft is slowly throttling the availability of this feature update across the globe and is hence not just available to the seekers.

Now You: What do you expect from this update?
