Russia's Putin scores 8 goals in exhibition hockey game

The Russian president and amateur hockey player was skating around a rink, waving to fans, when his skates caught on a rug and he tumbled onto the ice.

Hall of Famers such as Vyacheslav Fetisov and Pavel Bure and the Kremlin's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu joined Putin on his team for the widely-advertised and televised match. He had earlier scored eight goals during the exhibition match, which has become an annual tradition.

His side claimed a 14-7 victory with Putin playing centre forward in his traditional number 11 shirt.


The offensive outburst offered compelling proof that reports of Putin's fading nose for the net have been greatly exaggerated. Lucky for us, we have video of it all, and can enjoy Putin slicing and dicing his way to the net - and finishing like a boss - for a nice goal.

Putin, whose approval ratings has slipped in recent years as Russian Federation battles economic woes, periodically plays hockey with government officials, businessmen and former National Hockey League stars in matches that are broadcast with pomp on national television. He's scored 36 (or 38) goals in those matches, an average of more than five per game.
