The Surprising Reason Selena Gomez Calls Social Media 'Dangerous'

She continued, "It does scare me when you see how exposed these young boys and young girls are".

One of her co-stars, the legendary Bill Murray, is also a big fan of Gomez, and the two made headlines when he whispered something in her ear at the Cannes red carpet. "I understand it's fantastic to use your platform, but it does scare me when you see how exposed that these young girls and young boys are and they're not really aware of the news or anything going on". The Dead Don't Die just premiered at Cannes where it opened the festival to mixed reviews and will next head to the Overlook Film Festival before arriving in theaters on June 14.

Gomez said pervasive internet bullying "scares" her and left many young people "devastated". The former Disney Channel star explained that she just needed some me time.

"As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given", she wrote in a statement at the time. I don't do a lot of pointless pictures.

"For my generation specifically, social media has been bad", Gomez said, according to a report in the Guardian. For me, I like to be intentional with it.

Gomez, who has been mobbed by autograph hunters in Cannes and dominated photo spreads from opening night on Tuesday, also warned about the fake news rampant on social media. "Selena loves what she does and she loves her fans, but she doesn't like the pressure and expectations of being under a microscope".
