13-0 win 'part of growing the game', says US captain

13-0 win 'part of growing the game', says US captain

The U.S. Women's National Team came roaring out of the gates at the 2019 Women's World Cup, reminding everyone that it's the team to beat.

The lopsided score didn't draw the brunt of the criticism, it was what many deemed were the over-the-top celebrations by the Americans, especially after some of their late goals when the game was already out of hand.

Goal difference may be important in deciding who wins the group, with the U.S. facing Chile next before taking on Sweden, the team who defeated them in the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics in 2016. "For me it's disrespectful, it's disgraceful", Kyle, who retired in 2017 after winning 101 caps, said on air. They suggested the more like Germany.

Kyle said later on social media she had received death threats for her comments, but repeated that she felt the Americans´ celebrations were "excessive and disrespectful". Thirteen times the US team scored and 13 times they celebrated with gusto. "I think it was important for us to celebrate with each other".

These are goals her teammates have "dreamt of their lives", of course they're going to go nuts every time the ball hits the back of the net.

The last time the Americans played on the world's biggest stage, Lloyd had a hat-trick in the first 16 minutes and the United States beat Japan 5-2 in Canada for the trophy. Alex Morgan of the US celebrates scoring their twelfth goal with Megan Rapinoe and team mate.

"As a Canadian we would just never ever think of doing something like that". The U.S. team is here to win a World Cup.

"Imagine it being you out there", she added. This changes when the women's team are in the World Cup.

Is it Ok to celebrate scoring no matter what, or do you think being a good sport should come first?

USA Today columnist Nancy Armour was unapologetic.

Retired American worldwide Taylor Twellman, now an ESPN analyst, tweeted he had zero problems with the scoreline given "this is THE tournament BUT celebrating goals (like #9) leaves a sour taste in my mouth like many of you". You want those players to have those feelings because then they go into games. The match ended on a 13-0 for the U.S., leaving their opponents in tears. "We accept our mistakes and we are going to improve".

Horan smashed in the third in the 32nd minute, but the floodgates really opened in the second half as Ellis's side scored four times in six minutes shortly after the restart. Forward Megan Rapinoe discussed the reaction to her team's blowout win on Tuesday morning, telling Fox Soccer, "our only crime was an explosion of joy".

The USWNT finished with an incredible 39 shots, 10 corners, and 75 percent possession in the rout. In 2018, it qualified by reaching the semifinals of the AFC Women's Asian Cup, where it lost to Australia - one of the current seeds in France - in a shootout.
