Brazilian attacker Cristiane beats Ronaldo to world record

The six-time women's world player of the year was ruled out of the match because of a left thigh injury. The 34-year old Brazilian overtook Ronaldo, who was 33 years old when he scored a hat-trick for Portugal against Spain in their 3-3 draw in the men's 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

The South Americans continued to create chances and could have doubled their lead after earning a penalty for handball by Jamaica defender Allyson Swaby.

Cristiane tucked in her second goal from a tight angle following the restart as Andressa provided the assist again, before the 34-year-old completed her hat-trick with a powerful free-kick that rattled the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line in the 64th minute.

They begin their campaign with a challenge against Jamaica which they should win yet progressively troublesome tests lie in wait against Australia and Italy for the side remaining in tenth in the world rankings.

Jamaica's only real threat came from their star forward Khadija Shaw, who fired one spectacular drive that Brazil goalkeeper Barbara did supremely well to prevent finding the top-right corner.

- Brazil's victory over Jamaica was its first win in any competition since July 2018 (2-1 vs. Japan), halting a run of nine consecutive defeats before today.

Marta is on Brazil's roster for her fifth World Cup. She has also won a silver medal at Olympics with Brazil and this year she is looking forward to winning the title.

Nicknamed The Reggae Girlz, Jamaica's women's football team made history by qualifying for the 2019 Women's World Cup.

- Cristiane's treble is the first by a Brazilian in a Women's World Cup match since June 1999, when both Sissi and Pretinha scored hat tricks in Brazil's 7-1 victory over Mexico.
