Another wrote: "Prayers for David Ortiz he was shot in the leg in the attempted robbery in the Dominican Republic is suspect has been arrested!"

Bautista said Ortiz underwent surgery and his condition was stable.

Local media reported that a Dominican TV host Jhoel Lopez was with Ortiz on Sunday night and also hit by a bullet. According to ESPN, the information about the wound being in the back/stomach was later information.

ESPN Deportes also heard from Ortiz's father Leo Ortiz that David was shot and wounded in Santo Domingo.

Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo around 8:50 p.m. when the gunman approached from behind and shot him.

The local reaction thus far has been one of shock and terror, with local businessman Elizeiel Salvador - who drove Ortiz to a nearby hospital - saying (translated), "this man deserves better!" He was fearful for his life and apparently told the doctor, "please don't let me die".

David Ortiz is expected to make a full recovery after being shot while at a bar in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night.

"The doctor in emergency says [Ortiz was] shot between the left side of the lower back and left through the abdomen", Soldevila tweeted in Spanish.

It is not known whether Ortiz was the target of the shooter. He retired after the 2016 season.

He helped Boston capture their first World Series title in 86 years in 2004, when he was the MVP of the American League Championship Series.

During Ortiz's career he was All-Star teams 10 times and a three-time World Series champion.
