Helicopter crashes into Midtown Manhattan building

"There was a helicopter that made a forced landing, emergency landing, or landed on the roof of the building for one reason or another", Cuomo said.

The pilot of a helicopter that crash-landed onto the roof of a 54-storey building in Manhattan has died, according to the New York City fire department.

"A call about the incident at the AXA Equitable Center on Seventh Avenue and West 49th Street came in shortly before 2 p.m.", the outlet reported.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters that a fire began when the aircraft hit but is under control.

The fire has since been extinguished, the New York Police Department said.

Video from the scene showed dozens of emergency vehicles with lights blaring.

Hundreds of people who worked in the building had to evacuate. Fire crews in NY are responding to the incident. "It sounded like a small engine plane at first then I just felt the building shake", he said.
