'I Apologised to Smith on Behalf of the Crowd': Virat Kohli

'I Apologised to Smith on Behalf of the Crowd': Virat Kohli

Sunday's defeat by India not only broke Australia's 10-match winning streak, but also confirmed that last year's ball-tampering scandal is not forgotten, and has followed the reigning champions to the World Cup in England.

During Australia's World Cup fixture against India, leg-spinner Adam Zampa was seen putting his hands inside his pocket and then rubbing the ball at The Oval in London, thus raising a few eyebrows and leaving people speculating about ball-tampering. He also did the same when Smith walked past, with both players shaking hands.

Kohli waved his hands to get their attention and without saying a word gestured them to applaud the Australian cricketer and not boo him. Steve Smith who witnessed the scene went up to Kohli to give a hand to Kohli as a part of sportsmanship. It was a good day for the captain, who had earlier won the toss, as he juggled his bowling attack against Australia's fearsome batting line-up. Behind him, spectators repeatedly chanted, "Cheater!" between boos. He instead made a "clap" gesture and pointed towards Smith. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah proved to be the pick of the bowlers as they scalped three wickets apiece.

"Just because there's so many Indian fans here, I just didn't want them to set a bad example", he concluded.

"He didn't do anything to be booed in my opinion".

"He's just playing cricket, he's just standing there. In my opinion that's not acceptable".

Despite losing that match, the Aussie selectors are unlikely to panic and there is every chance they will name an unchanged side although there is some pressure on David Warner and Marcus Stoinis to improve with the bat. The team expected it, and the players were ready for it.

This time around, Kohli was firmly in Smith's corner. The guy's back you know he's trying to play well for his side even in the IPL I saw him.

"We've had issues in the past, we have had arguments on the field".

Reflecting on the loss, Maxwell said: "Yeah we probably just missed a few key moments during the game".

"What's happened has happened".
