Bonansea, however, equalized 11 minutes into the second half after a defensive blunder on the edge of the box.

Barbara Bonansea fired Italy to a remarkable comeback win over Australia after her brace, including a stoppage time victor, claimed a 2-1 Group C victory in the women's World Cup on Sunday.

Less than a minute remained when Italy won a free kick in the corner, allowing the Juventus winger to jump above Sam Kerr in the box and put a header past Lydia Williams.

Kerr was visibly upset with the loss, throwing her armband to the ground on the full-time whistle.

Italy coach Milena Bertolini was pleased with the result over an Australian side ranked sixth in the world.

Chloe Logarzo has kept her place in midfield alongside Tameka Butt, with Hayley Raso and Caitlin Foord to support striker and captain Sam Kerr.

Barbara Bonansea thought she had broken the deadlock for Italy minutes earlier, but VAR adjudged she was centimetres offside, however, the forward grabbed a leveller against the run of play in the second-half, pouncing on a mistake by Clare Polkinghorne in defence.

As both sides pushed for a late victor, it would be Bonansea that stepped up as she headed home the victor in the 95th minute following a corner.

There was no place in the team for key midfielder Elise Kellond-Knight, who has battled leg injuries over the past fortnight.

Overall, the Matildas looked lost at sea despite being the favourites in the clash.
