Macron to send Trump replacement friendship tree

Macron to send Trump replacement friendship tree

"Europe. must build new rules of trust and security with Russian Federation, and should not only agree with NATO", Macron said in an interview with the Swiss television channel RTS.

"The symbol was to plant it together".

By November a year ago, relations between the two presidents had soured, with Trump tweeting his displeasure over Macron's comments about nationalism and the need for Europe to develop its own defence force independent of the US.

He then promised to send another oak from the Belleau Wood in northern France, where more than 1,800 American soldiers died in a key World War I battle in 1918.

It died in quarantine after being dug up.

"We will send him another", Macron told RTS when asked about the tree. "I'll send another oak because I think the US marines and the friendship for freedom between our peoples is well worth it".

Trump and the French president planted the oak tree in the White House's gardens in April 2018 as a sign of friendship. And, at the time, Macron tweeted that the tree served as "a reminder at the White House of these ties that bind us".

During his interview with RTS, according to CNN, Macron said that it was because of this quarantine that the tree died.

"We need to have a strategic debate, so this week I will have another, long and intense conversation with Vladimir Putin, as the president of France and the G7", Macron stressed. "There is disagreement among us, but we work together".

"It turns out that this oak was put in quarantine for American sanitary reasons and the poor thing did not survive", Macron said.

Yet despite the symbolic setback, officials in both countries say Trump and Macron have been getting along well.

The two leaders have recently disagreed on approaches to trade and a nuclear deal with Iran.
