Proteas on the board after washout at Rose Bowl

Earlier, the 2019 ICC World Cup clash between West Indies and South Africa was interrupted by rain at Ageas Bowl in Hampshire.

Sheldon Cottrell removed the struggling Hashim Amla and then accounted for Aiden Markram - who had replaced JP Duminy in the Proteas XI - through a well-directed short delivery.

West Indies are next in action on Friday against hosts England at the same venue, while South Africa meet Afghanistan a day later at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

The West Indies are fifth in the World Cup table with three points after three matches, while South Africa are second from bottom after four games, leaving their hopes of making the semi-finals hanging by a thread.

The news that the champion batsman had made himself available for the World Cup squad on the eve of the squad announcement arrived with such bad timing - on the morning after South Africa's defeat to India - that one could forgive Du Plessis for being extremely angry with his childhood friend for creating another media storm around an already embattled team and another distraction for the players.

"We wanted him to be ready for today purely from the fact it feels every game is a must-win game for us at the moment", captain Faf du Plessis said after the "no-result" against the Windies.

"Yeah, it was a really good start again by the bowlers, it's unfortunate the weather came", Holder said.

"We're expecting rain", ESPN Cricinfo quoted him as saying. "We're not focusing on the negatives", he was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.

The Proteas will need to score quickly before the heavy rain predicted during the afternoon, hoping the run-rate is high when the West Indies try to chase a total.

West Indies have been forced to make two changes as Darren Bravo and Kemar Roach were picked in place of unfit Andre Russell and Evin Lewis.
