Saginaw native and tennis legend Serena Williams, 37, ranks 63rd with $29.2 million in earnings ($4.2 from winnings and $25 million via endorsements) thanks to her 23 Grand Slam titles and a diverse business portfolio.

Despite earning $9 million more in endorsements than his rival Lionel Messi, Ronaldo's $65 million salary was dwarfed by the Barcelona star's $92 million pay packet.

The top 100 includes athletes from 25 countries and their $5.96 billion combined earnings are up 5 per cent from the previous year when American boxer Floyd Mayweather was first with $430 million. Athletes had to earn a minimum of $25m to make this year's list.

Basketball led all sports, with 35 NBA players among the top 100. Russell Wilson (NFL player) $135 million 7.

No Australians made the list, but basketballer Steven Adams from New Zealand came in at 78th.

Messi is only the second footballer to top the rankings after Ronaldo, and only the eighth different athlete to take the number one spot since the rankings began in 1990.

Of the 100 athletes, 62 are Americans.

Overall, the top athletes were from 25 countries - up from 22 past year.

Neymar was the third highest on the list, having earned $105m this past year.

Speaking to Forbes, Kurt Badenhausen, senior editor of Forbes Media, said: "The global impact of soccer is clearly reflected in earnings in 2019, with the top three athletes on the list being Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar".

Messi was one of 38 non-American athletes on the list, with 62 United States stars in the top 100. Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Serbia and Venezuela all have two players each on the list.

Messi, who scored 36 goals while leading Barcelona to the La Liga title this year, earned $US127 million ($AU182m) between his salary and endorsements to move up one spot on the list of the world's 100 highest-paid athletes.
