Tourists dying at Dominican resorts spark probe by Federal Bureau of Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now helping to probe the deaths of three Americans who perished under mysterious circumstances in a five-day span at neighboring resorts in the Dominican Republic, officials said Tuesday.

The relatives of Robert Bell Wallace told Fox News on Sunday they made a decision to share the story of his death at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino resort in light of the recent deaths of American tourists on the Caribbean island.

A family spokesman told Fox News that she collapsed after having a drink from the minibar.

Thirty members of the family took off for the Dominican Republic to be in place for Tickenoff's wedding on April 14.

Wallace's family was alarmed to hear of three more deaths of American tourists that had occurred in the Dominican Republic in the month following his death.

Miranda Schaup-Werner, a Pennsylvania woman, died nearly four weeks earlier, on May 25, after she had a drink from her minibar at another hotel, the Bahia Principe La Romana.

Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, booked a room with her husband at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville hotel.

Last year, David Harrison, 45, of Maryland, suddenly died at the same hotel that Wallace stayed at.

Arnold said a hotel doctor later checked on Wallace and determined on April 13 that he needed to go to the hospital.


"The safety of U.S. citizens that live in, work in, and visit the Dominican Republic remains our highest priority", Robin Bernstein, the U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, said in a statement.

The Dominican Republic's minister of tourism, Francisco Javier García, cautioned against speculating over the cause of deaths for the Americans who have recently died.

Dominican authorities have yet to give the family a cause of death, Ms Arnold said. Sport's sister Felecia Nieves, in an interview with FOX29, said they were told Sport died from a heart attack.

According to the Dominican authorities, all four died of natural causes but the families are looking for answers.

Holmes and Day, of Maryland, were found by resort staff after they missed their scheduled check-out time that day, per the statement.
