Uber eyes drones for food delivery, unveils new autonomous vehicle

Rather than delivering to your home, the drones will fly to designated zones, where couriers will pick up the goods and deliver them to your door.

According to Bloomberg, which got to witness the drone delivery in action in May, the company plans to begin drone delivery in San Diego this summer with pricing "consistent" with Uber Eats regular delivery that can now cost up to $8.50.

Uber says the service should decrease food delivery times.

The drone then meets an Uber Eats driver at a drop-off location, and the driver will hand-deliver the meal to the customer.

The test can get underway because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) selected the city of San Diego to participate in a commercial drone test program in 2018, and San Diego has made a decision to partner with Uber.

'Our goal is to expand Uber Eats drone delivery so we can provide more options to more people at the tap of a button, ' said Luke Fischer, head of flight operations at Uber Elevate.

The company said the knowledge it gains from the tests will help with Uber's planned aerial ride-sharing network.

Volvo and Uber have whipped the wraps off their first production auto capable of full self-driving. This is the third vehicle they've developed together. The Volvo XC90 SUV base vehicle is kitted out with Uber's self-driving tech, meaning it'll be ready to take to the streets by itself in the future as part of Uber's ride-hailing service. "If any of the primary systems should fail for some reason, the back-up systems are created to immediately act to bring the vehicle to a stop".

Uber and Volvo Cars partnered in September 2016.

"Working in close partnership with companies like Volvo is a key ingredient to effectively building a safe, scalable, self-driving fleet", said Eric Meyhofer, CEO of Uber Advanced Technologies Group.

Volvo plans to use a similar autonomous base vehicle concept for their autonomous cars which are expected to be launched in the early 2020s.
