Wambach defends U.S. after 13-0 humiliation of Thailand

With the 2019 FIFA World Cup in full swing, the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team begins its quest to defend its 2015 win.

They had found Chile goalkeeper Christiane Endler an impenetrable wall until Asllani profited from a poor attempt to clear the ball by Camila Saez on 83 minutes and arrowed her shot into the top corner.

The U.S. National Team's first game will be against Thailand on Tuesday at 12 P.M. PST/3 P.M. EST.

The United States will launch their title defence at the Women's World Cup in Reims, France, against Thailand tonight. Carli Lloyd (pictured) scored three goals and assisted four more in that match.

The U.S. team brings a squad replete with talent and experience, but it also must shoulder sky-high expectations.

Elsewhere, Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg revealed that star player Dzsenifer Marozsan may miss the rest of the World Cup after being ruled out of Wednesday's crucial Group B clash with Spain due to a broken toe.

This year, however, the spotlight is on as France hosts the women's World Cup. Even the team's newer members such as forward Mallory Pugh and midfielder Lindsey Horan have been with the team at least three years and played at the last Olympics. They were also responsible for the memorable 1999 World Cup win on home soil in front of full stadiums.

American soccer player and 2015 World Cup victor Julie Ertz says her team is thinking mainly about two things: winning and increasing the sport's popularity.

"I know that there is a large responsibility on my shoulders in terms of being a good role model", she told Oregon Live in 2013.

On Monday Argentina secured a surprise 0-0 draw with Japan and Canada edged Cameroon 1-0 to get their campaign off to a winning start. Just after the 2016 Olympics, the US beat Thailand 9-0 in a friendly.

"I just think they could have won with some humility and grace, and they just couldn't manage to do that", Rustad said."Celebrating goals later in the game like this is just completely unnecessary". But the USA faces Sweden last in the group stage, requiring some strategy by Ellis on whom to play and for how long, especially if she wants her best players to have fresh legs going into the knockout round. "So it's already friendly fire", the USA forward said. The American team will take on Chile on Sunday.
