A day after Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy made a surprise announcement in the Assembly that he would seek a trust vote, efforts were intensified to reach out to the dissident legislators.

As many as ten Karnataka rebel MLAs, who were camping in Mumbai, arrived in Bengaluru by two special flights, hours after the Supreme Court allowed them to meet the assembly speaker to convey their decision to resign. Kumaraswamy said in response to a media query, according to PTI. All that the Speaker is saying is that under Article 190 he is entitled to check if the resignations are voluntary, genuine and bona fide.

Rohatgi said, " Karnataka Speaker is ducking and acting in a partisan manner.

The Court further noted that an incidental question that would arise was the kind and extent of the directions that should be issued by a constitutional court to another constitutional functionary, which in the present case happened to be the Speaker of the Assembly.

"It also requires to be ascertained if the Speaker yesterday sent back the disqualification petitions", the Supreme Court order.

On the other side, appearing for the Speaker, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi submitted that the Speaker first had to decide the disqualification proceedings.

However, the Congress got a rude shock after its MLAs started resigning since last Saturday. "He can't be maligned and lampooned like this", he added.

"As the BJP has already poached about a dozen legislators to destabilise our coalition government for its "operation kamala", we have moved about 50 of our party members to Clarks Exotica Convention Resorts on the outskirts of the city", Congress spokesman Ravi Gowda told IANS here.

"The atmosphere is chaotic and the fall of the government is imminent", the state BJP chief said.

Breather for Congress-JD (S) ruling combine as the Supreme Court said that it needed to be examined if Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar required time to decide on disqualification of the MLAs.

Nala Ponnappa comments on the ideological vacuum of the "rebel" MLAs in Karnataka. "He also says he has to study the resignations...."

The 10 rebel MLAs moved the apex court alleging that the speaker was not accepting their resignations.

Pinarayi was referring to the defection of 10 Congress leaders to the BJP in Goa and the resignations of 18 Cong-JD (S) MLAs in Karnataka.

The 13-month-old Congress-JDS government had earlier this month slumped into crisis following the resignation of 10 MLAs.
